The Silent Vaginal Health Epidemic Affecting Millions of Women in the UK
Published By Alexandra Morgan, MD | OB-GYN • Last update: Oct 30

More women are struggling with recurring vaginal infections in the UK than ever before.
And it's getting worse every year.
I've been an OB-GYN for over two decades and what I'm seeing in my practice isn't just concerning - it's an epidemic hiding in plain sight:
Emma, 34: Started with thrush. Her GP recommended Canesten, then anti-fungals, then antibiotics. She ended up with both thrush and BV.
Ivy, 52: Seven years of BV. On antibiotics 3-4 times a year. The smell cleared, then returned weeks later - usually after her period or sex.
Jennifer, 27: Prescribed antibiotics for BV. It cleared. Then she developed thrush. Both conditions at once.
Three different women. Three different symptoms.
One root cause.
If this sounds familiar, your body isn't the problem.
The treatment is.
Whether you're dealing with:
- Recurring Thrush that survives treatment
- BV that returns weeks after antibiotics
- Or both conditions at once
The root cause is the same: vaginal dysbiosis.
What Is Vaginal Dysbiosis?

Your vagina has its own ecosystem. The vaginal microbiome.
When it's balanced, good bacteria create an environment where harmful bacteria and yeast can't survive.
You stay protected. Fresh. Infection-free.
But when the balance breaks, dysbiosis happens.
Good bacteria decline. Harmful bacteria move in. So does yeast.
The result? BV. Thrush. Discomfort.
This can be caused by various factors:
chronic stress. antibiotics. hormonal changes. a new sexual partner.
And it can happen to every woman.
Here's why standard treatment keeps failing:

The current treatment approach focuses on clearing the infection.
But it doesn't ask why the infection keeps coming back.
The answer: a depleted microbiome can't defend itself.
Canesten kills yeast. But it doesn't restore the good bacteria that keep yeast in check. So it grows back.
Antibiotics kill bad bacteria. But they also wipe out your protective bacteria.
This is why I treat recurring infections as a microbiome deficiency, not just a bacterial problem.
The solution isn't stronger antibiotics.
It's restoring the protective bacteria that prevent infections in the first place.
The Probiotic Problem

Most probiotics weren't designed for vaginal dysbiosis.
They were designed for digestion.
Different problems need different strains and digestive bacteria won't restore your vaginal microbiome.
You need strains clinically proven to work down there.
At doses high enough to actually colonize.
Most probiotics fail on both counts.
What Actually Works

First, specific vaginal strains.
Lactobacillus rhamnosus, reuteri, and acidophilus. These lower pH to protective levels and block harmful bacteria from colonizing.
Second, a beneficial yeast.
A good vaginal probiotic should contain a beneficial yeast like Saccharomyces boulardii.
It competes directly with Candida, crowding it out before thrush starts.
Third, therapeutic doses.
At least 7-8 billion CFU per capsule. Anything less won't colonize effectively.
Much higher doses can overwhelm your microbiome.
What I Recommend to My Patients

Seluni meets all the clinical criteria I look out for when recommending such probiotic, including the beneficial yeast that most probiotics miss.
But here's another crucial detail: It's manufactured right here in the UK to pharmaceutical-grade standards.
When specificity matters this much, the quality of the strains and consistency in manufacturing make all the difference.
In my practice, I witness the majority of patients remain symptom-free beyond the typical relapse window.
Most see the first noticable improvements within two weeks - and stay symptom-free.

omg this hits so close to home… been dealing with recurring BV for the past 2 years and nothing helped long term. tired of spending money on treatments that only work temporarily. definitely gonna give this a shot, at this point I’ll try anything that might help 🙏

this is exactly what I needed to read!! I get thrush almost every month, especially after my period, and canesten only helps temporarily. then I'm back to square one within weeks. it's exhausting and honestly embarrassing at this point. just placed an order because I'm desperate for something that actually prevents it from coming back instead of just treating it when it happens 🤞

I'm 48 and since perimenopause started everything down there has been a nightmare. constant thrush, dryness, pH all over the place. my doctor just keeps prescribing pessaries but they don't address why this keeps happening. really hope this works because the hormonal changes have made everything so much worse and I miss feeling normal. ordering now because I need something that actually helps long term 🙏
